Day 6 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200/grip, L-bracket, hand-held
70-200 2.8 VR @160mm, 1/320 sec, f/2.8, ISO 200

Westin getting air.
Not a technically complicated shot. Just the 70-200 VR wide open, ISO 200 for an extra stop of shutter speed, focus tracking and following the subject while squeezing off multiple shots in burst. The slope was pretty steep and the sledders careened down the hills pretty fast. Always fun to get out and practice some panning shots with available action.

Taken at a shallow, private valley surrounded by Forest Service lands. Zip line and a very large swing suspended from a cable strung across the valley were also keeping the kids busy.

White balance set to the snow in the scene, square crop for tighter framing.

Day 5 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200/grip, L-bracket, hand-held
70-200 2.8 VR @82mm, 1/250 sec, f/8, ISO 100

Dark clouds coming over the ridge after yesterday's snow storm. I shot this on the way back from the grocery store. Not hoping for good light this late in the morning, I was suprised to see how it was interacting with the clouds coming over the ridge. I took about a dozen shots, and this was almost the last shot before heading home. The original color was "nice" but did not add a lot to the shot, so went for contrast over color. Crop off bottom and top for a resulting 16x9 aspect ratio, slight vignette and just a hind of dodge & burn finished off the idea.

Day 4 of 366

Manual exposure mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200/grip, L-bracket, hand-held
Sigma 10-20 @11.5mm, 1/50 sec, f/4.2, ISO 100

Fresh snow fall with a leaf blowing across it. Hand-held while kneeling in the snow on my elbows. I was careful to make sure the texture in the snow came out, which is tough when the lighting is not coming from any one direction but from everywhere.

I tried the shot with "white snow" white balance, but preferred the cold cast to the snow instead, and gave more color dynamics to the leaf to play off of.

Ran through my HEC process, for those of you that do not know what this is, stay tuned...
Cropped square as I often like the square format.

Day 3 of 366

Manual exposure mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200/grip, L-bracket
Cable release, underwater housing for a low angle.
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 31 sec, f/13, 10 mm, ISO 100

Snow at dawn was falling pretty good, camera was getting a nice covering of white.
Wanted to try some low angle shots in the water while the snow was falling.
Often I am the only one here, other than the ducks, so fun to just be here.
This is shot with a daylight white balance to capture the blues.
In the final product I desaturated the image.
I like it when foreground intersects with the background.
Having a touch of the flu, this is about all I could muster today.

No boots to get into the water further, and no desire to push the envelope and possibly fall in. This shot came out pretty good I thought and must try some more like this as snow is falling.

Day 2 of 366

Manual exposure mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200, Sigma 10-20
79 sec, f/13, 10 mm, ISO 100

A split level view of underwater and sky at dawn. B&W and toned.
Taken with a prototype underwater housing I built and a cable release with multiple exposures to compensate for the light values above and below the surface. I am interested in exploring the landcapes of half underwater and half above water. As the weather turns better, there will be more opportunities for exciting shots.

There was no great clouds, or a great sunrise for that matter. So I planned to just focus on the lights on the water, the juxtaposition of a split underwater view, and the contrast within the scene.

Day 1 of 366

Manual exposure mode, matrix metering, Nikon D200, Nikkor 50mm 1.8
71 sec, f/8, 50 mm, ISO 100

A bit of light painting in the home studio, black background, tiny bit of ambient light to see. As many times as I tried to do this in one take, it just was almost impossible. So it is a composite, but all the elements were painted with the intention of them coming together this way.

So here is my first photo blog.
Thanks for the push Rick!
