Day 60 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/160 sec, f/1.4, ISO 2000, 14-bit RAW

No color or saturation adjustments, right out of the camera passed through Capture NX to retain in-camera settings. My son going to bed, available light. As framed & shot.

Why Compelling

I love the color, the framing and the moment. It just works well for me.

Four more years and we can shoot on this day again.

A couple other shots from tonight.

My daughter is feeling under the weather with her cold. Will shot her some day soon.

Day 59 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, L-bracket, tripod, cable-release
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 1/50 sec, f/11, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

All the color there was this morning. Playing with LiveView while composing this image, as it was just inches off the water.
I did some long exposure shots of the water, but I liked the subtle ripples more.

Why Complelling
I like the underglow of the blue beneath the warmth that is trying to invade the morning. There was no sunrise colors, but was here long enough to catch what light did change color slightly. I like the 16x9 crop with the reflection and subjle ripples in the foreground.

Day 58 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, tripod, cable release
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/2 sec, f/1.4, ISO 3200, 14-bit RAW, 8 exposures

The night sky from my front yard. Thought I would try something...
8 quick photos at 1/2 second, ISO 3200, 30mm 1.4 wide open, as framed.
Photoshop CS3 Extended -> Load 8 NEF images into stack -> convert to smart object -> Stack Mode: Median
Some layers and adjustment modes to make the sky darker but not the stars.
Noise Ninja layer at auto profile reduced to 50%. Grayscale, resize, post resize sharpening.
There are some slight JPG compression artifacts in the shadows, but the full size original is very clean.

Why Compelling
ISO 3200 captures and this clean of a result - pretty cool.
1/2 second of a dark night sky - pretty cool.

Day 57 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, L-bracket, tripod, cable-release
Nikkor 50mm 1.8, 1/160 sec, f/4, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

My new printer arrived today. Quite a beast. Thought it would be fun to lineup the Nikons on top of the Canon since they are going to be feeding it for a long time. I paid for a lift gate on top of the free shipping, but they did not provide one. So we had to lift the 180 pound pallet off the truck by hand. It was worth it of course. Time to get printing!!!
:-)

Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF5100 17" 12 ink system for fine art printing with Adobe RGB gamut and 16 bit printing. Shipping was free, tabletop catch tray was free and extra maintenance cartridge was free too. $1399 February special. Hard to beat that.

Why Compelling
Hey, quite the juxtaposition eh?

Day 56 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, L-bracket, tripod, cable-release
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 1/10 sec, f/8, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

Last light of the day during an incoming storm.

Why Compelling
I like the contrast in the clouds and the darkness in the scene with the slight brightness beyond the clouds.

Day 55 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, tripod, wireless remote
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8, 1/125 sec, f/6.3, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

Blossom taking a yawn in the studio.

Why Compelling
I thought the wide open mouth was fun.

Day 54 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand held
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/60 sec, f/1.4, ISO 3200, 12-bit RAW, 7.5fps

What a great day! This wedding was a lot of fun and the camera gear performed very well.
I am absolutely loving auto ISO performance. Just set the camera to a minimum shutter speed, let auto ISO go up to 3200 as needed, put on a fast lens and low light is no longer a challenge.

Why Compelling
I like the moment I saw unfolding. I quickly put the camera in my sports/action preset (12-bit raw at up to 7.5fps) and fired off two seconds of shots. This one was the best. I like the framing, the composition and the expression is great. I like the people watching in the background and the surroundings. It came out very well for ISO 3200!
