Day 90 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Nikkor 75-300 2.8 VR @ 102mm, 1/400 sec, f/8, ISO 200

A simple shot for today. Sunset vista from my driveway in between passing storms.

Why Compelling
Always looking for the light that happens when storms break up. Tonight was fun to watch then went to the end of the driveway to catch a couple cloud moments before the next storm blocked the view. I like the ridgeline and the cloud tops and how they lined up too. Not traditional foreground, but I like the way the mountains create a foreground, and the clouds and sky create a middle ground and background with plenty of depth.

Day 89 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/1600 sec, f/1.4, Auto ISO = 200,
-1.33EV, SB-800 iTTL at -2/3EV. Lightsphere II diffuser, auto white-balance

Another great wedding to shoot today. Hard to pick a favorite, but this one I kept coming back to. She chose this pose, I chose to put the bright lights of the carving station lights behind her. Color retained by passing the RAW through Capture NX with a slight desaturation. Today I had the wedding coordinator, an assistant and a second shooter. Busy day!

Why Compelling
I like the glow behind her, I like her impromptu pose that she chose and I really like the color that was available, especially in a room full of mixed light.

Day 88 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR @ 70mm, 1/125 sec, f/8, ISO 200

Storm came through today and dumped some snow. Not unheard of, but unusual at this time of year.
Had to get out and take some shots when the clouds broke up during sunset. Three exposure merge, 1 stop apart each.

Why Compelling
Spring snow for one, great light for another. I was hoping I could get to a location to capture the long warm light across the cliff face before the sun set.

Day 87 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 1/60 sec, f/8, ISO 200, polarizer, 9 exposures

A vertical 180 degree panorama from one side of the sky, above, over to the other side. The sun is setting at the top in this case. Something different to keep pushing the envelope. I merged the shots in Photoshop CS3 Extended. Then a 16x9 crop fit the shot nicely. I cropped out the foregrounds on either end, as I liked the shot better with just the clouds.

Why Compelling
Trying to keep pushing the envelope. I like the 180 degree sunset in the result. Fun and different.

Day 86 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 1/25 sec, f/11, ISO 200, 12-bit RAW, polarizer, 5 exposure brackets at 8fps

Another scouting trip for subject matter. Today I took my mountain bike, one body, one lens, and a small bag out for a ride at lunch. This is one of the objects I found and liked. You cannot drive here, and walking takes way too long, so a bicycle works great to get to other vistas along the trail. Crazy weather today. Storm came in and snowed big flakes for 15 minutes at 8:00am, then full sun by noon, then dark clouds came in again. Never a dull weather moment.

Why Compelling
Love the resulting tones, the main object and the way it came together. The original had too much contrast in the sky, so made sure I toned that down in the final. I wanted the eye to stay on the valve but still appreciate the surroundings. I think I pulled that off. Toned with a gradient map on top of the B&W adjustment layer. I then added a bit of the rust color back in, as I think it helps the shot.

What got me here today:

My trusty mountain bike, the first aluminum frame Trek made.

Day 85 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, L-bracket, tripod, cable-release
Nikkor 105mm 2.8 VR Macro, 1 sec, f/11, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

Resized from the JPG shot with the RAW file

Why Compelling
I love the glow from the flame. The bubble in the droplet caught my eye as the focused subject here. Fun shoot.
