Day 121 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, monopod
Sigma 10-20 @10mm, 1/400sec, f/11, ISO 200, no filters

Pear country in full bloom. They say that if you cannot see pine trees from a pear orchard, then it is not pear growing country. This is a three image stitch. Taken with a fully extended monopod, held in my right hand and triggered by a set of Pocket Wizards Plus II units.

Why Compelling

I like the vantage point of being high in the tree. The light was broken up by clouds in the sky but I like this shot considering it is 12:30 in the afternoon.

Day 120 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, tripod, cable-release
Nikkor 105 VR Macro, 1/60sec, f/16, ISO 320
Two SB-600 speedlights triggered with a set of Pocket Wizards.

50 degrees tonight and this bee was not moving very much. 15 focus stacked shots with a 105VR macro and 68mm extension tube. Aligned with CS3 and merged with CombineZM. Two SB-600 speedlights, one with a warm gel and one with a cool gel to play with some color dynamics. Flashes triggered with a set of Pocket Wizards. It was windy to night so this was a bit tricky.

Why Compelling
I like the results of this trial. I think the blue highlights on the black legs adds some color dynamics to the warm light on the rest of the bee.

Here is one of the setup shots that I tried tonight.

Day 119 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D40x, monopod
Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR @ 120mm, 1/100 sec, f/4, ISO 100

Floor pour at a local commercial construction site this morning.
I liked all the layers and depth in this shot.

Why Compelling
I like the depth of the layers here in this morning scene. It works well for me with the lineup.

Day 118 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Nikkor 105 VR macro, f/5, 1/125 sec, ISO 200

Flox processed in Lightroom 2 beta.

Why Compelling
I like the soft light, the soft color and the soft vignette. The 105VR is a master at smooth foreground and background bokeh, and it certainly worked well in this shot too.

Day 117 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR @ 200mm, 1/100 sec, f/2.8, ISO 200, 14-bit RAW

Apple blossom evening.

Why Compelling
Well, after seeing orchards in bloom all over the valley and driving the kids around today and taking some shots of them...I shot this in the back of Arby's! The branch in the light caught my eye and stopped to take a few shots for the heck of it. There are only two trees, but just enough for a tele shot.

Day 116 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/10 sec, f/5, ISO 1600

The event space at our local museum. I went there at lunch today to help them with the setup of how to take better photos of all their inventory for their database with images attached. I took my camera, as you never know, and with non profits there are always collateral needs. In a couple weeks I am going to donate some photography of this space when it is setup for an event. The shots for their newsletter were too dark. A simple exposure with the D300 brought out a lot of light, Will come back and work the space and light balance with the details that will be on the tables and the decorations.
Three exposures, auto bracket, while we were standing there talking about the lighting. Then aligned in CS3, merged with Enfuse and resized for sharing.

Why Compelling
This was very simple to do with the D300, but very difficult for them with a P&S and little knowledge of available light shooting and such. This is nothing really compelling, but being able to donate work to a worthy cause is always worth doing in my book.

Day 115 of 366

Manual mode, matrix metering, Nikon D300/grip, hand-held
Sigma 30 1.4 EX, 1/250 sec, f/9, ISO 400

One full set of ink, and just $900 - yikes.
I know there is more expensive ink, but this is enough for me. ;-)
12 colors; C, M, Y, BK, MBK, GY, PGY, PC, PM, R, G, B,
Alien Bee B400 and B800, one behind large diffusion screen with a 36" umbrella for general illumination, another through umbrella bounce for some specularity.

Why Compelling
Simple product style shot on white. Nothing too fancy or difficult, but a good white background can be a touch tricky to get done right.
